Hype/Papervision experiments

on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 16:11

The Hype framework is a fantastic, really easy to use framework devised by Joshua Davis and Branden Hall. It allows you to very quickly create Generative Artwork and is specifically tailored to creative Flash designers and developers who want to see results fast with minimum coding.

One of the most interesting aspects of the framework is the SoundAnalyzer class as this gives you access to the sound spectrum of any audio playing through the Flash player. From this you can easily manipulate objects in relation to the frequency range of the audio and create some very interesting music visualisation.

I wanted to see if I could use this with Papervision so I've created some experiments using very simple cubes and some most excellent tunes.

There is a caveat though ... the Flash player will throw a security sandbox error if there is another SWF playing in the browser at the same time as the SWF that uses the SoundAnalyzer so these demos are really only suited to standalone apps that you might want to build in AIR for instance.

I aim to look into porting some of this code to AIR and then wrapping them up as Mobile apps that allow the user to play music from their device and then have some cool visualisers running on their phone or tablet. Maybe one for the PlayBook?

Another thing I'd like to try is to see how this works with the new Adobe Molehill 3D api using hardware acceleration.
